Ghazala Hashmi has made fighting hate a core part of her work — from introducing legislation to protect communities to publicly challenging bigotry in every form.

How she’s fighting back:

• Introduced legislation to expand Virginia’s hate-crime law — SB 1203 (2021) — to cover attacks based on perceived membership in protected classes. The bill was later tabled in committee, but it set a clear standard for stronger protections.

• Supports strengthening and enforcing the Virginia Human Rights Act to guard against discrimination by religion or national origin — see the law’s protections in the Code of Virginia.
